Information on Potchefstroom

The beautiful university city of Potchefstroom lies in the south-eastern corner of the Southern Region of the North West Province - about 120 km from Johannesburg, which makes it an ideal destination for the short-time visitor to South Africa. It is situated in an area where several major habitat regions overlap. This leads to quite a variety of birds occurring here. Nature has blessed this province with breathtaking scenic beauty, infinitive tapestries of green maize and golden sunflower fields, vast plains of African bushveld, dotted with umbrella thorn trees, and wide open grassveld interspersed with mixed acacia and other bush - a birder's paradise...!!
With the most important birding spots in the area, like the world-renowned OPM Prozesky Bird Sanctuary literally on our doorstep, Cosy Cottage B&B organises customised birding trips on a daily basis. Our focus is not on birding only - we also try to ensure that our guests get a complete and memorable experience of the traditional warmth of the province as well as it's people's pride in their history and culture. Our guests will take home with them a lasting bond of friendship and an unforgetable experience of hospitality, privacy and tranquillity. Contact us for quotes on tailor-made birding and/or nature trips in addition to your stay.
Potchefstroom also offers several other nature experiences. The soon to be opened Highveld National Park, as well as the established Buffelsvlei Wild Animal Park, is about 12 km from Cosy Cottage B&B. About 20 km from us lies the VREDEFORT DOME. 2000 million years ago a giant meteorite struck the earth near the present day village of Vredefort creating a crater 80km in diameter and forcing the surrounding landscape into a dome-like feature. This is the largest and oldest meteorite impact site on earth and has acquiured World Heritage status. The Vaal River forms the southern boundary to the area, while to the north a conservancy has been established to conserve the diverse animal, bird and plant life. The dome offers some of the finest birding, hiking and adventure tourism sites in South Africa.
